Rara Lake, located at an elevation of 2,972 meters, is one of the largest and deepest lake in Nepal. It lies in the Mugu district of Nepal in the Karnali region. One can easily visit the lake by taking a 3 hours foot tour from the district headquarters in Gamgadhi. Rara Lake covers an area of 10.8 square kilometres with a maximum length of 5 kilometres, a width of 3.2 kilometres, and a depth of 167 meters.

The color of the Rara Lake changes with the season from time to time on a daily basis. Its color transition from blue to purple, from cymric to grey facilitates viewers to watch the changing adaptation of the natural water from one state to another state. In more common terms the sightseeing views of color transformation captivates the heart of the traveller which adds value by connecting the nature of flora and fauna with the human world. The reflection of Shinje and Kanjirowa mountains resembles the fairy attraction to the travellers.

Talking about the history of Rara Lake, it is closely associated with the late King Mahendra Rara's journey from Jumla through footpaths. The local attractions became popular from that day and came to its growth internationally. Due to this reason the lake was also named after King Mahendra as a Mahendra Lake. His close attachment towards the lake made him to call the lake  as ‘Apsara’ after falling in love with its natural beautiness.

Rara National Park: The Himalayan National Park is home to 51 different kinds of mammals, including the Himalayan black bear, thar, ghoral, ratuwa deer, habre, Musk Deer, and others. The park is home to 272 bird species, including monals, coots, scarecrows, ducks, pheasants, and common teal.Rara Lake and the park's surrounding wooded region have become ideal habitats for a variety of local and migratory species. Three indigenous Asala fish species can be found here.

Murmatap: Murmatap, at an elevation of over 3200 meters above sea level, is the nicest sight near Rara Lake. From this vantage point, Rara Lake, Nepal's largest lake, appears to be shaped like a bowl.Murmatap, which has attracted many internal and external tourists, is accessible from more than a half-dozen districts in the far western and midwestern zones.

Bird Watching View: Rara Lake is alive with migratory birds. Birds from Siberia, Tibet, Europe, and India migrate to Lake Rara to chill down, and the lake now supports over 300 bird species.Twenty of the 49 bird species that frequent Rara continue to enjoy its waters, while more than 300 can be found alone in Rara National Park. Tourist activities in Rara have expanded as a result of the arrival of foreign birds.

Natural Beauty: From the month of Jestha to the month of Ashwin, Rara Lake changes shape throughout the day, resembling a fairy of paradise decked out in flowers. Rara Lake also has Asala (Himalayan) fish, which are found nowhere else in the world. Murmatap, located to the west of Raratal, is a three-hour hike away. From here, one can see the panoramic view of Saipal Mountain as well as the breathtaking views of Rara Lake. The lake offers panoramic views of the Sisne and Kanjirova mountains, as well as the endemic 'Asala' fish species.
